Negative Nellie needs to go!

Negative Nellie isn’t much fun to be around. She’s that voice in your head that just won’t shut up. She’s mean. She’s cruel. She’s judgmental. And she is LOUD! It’s like she is shouting at you all the time.

So what’s going on with this? Who or what is Negative Nellie? How can you give her less airtime? How can you make her go away?

Negative Nellie is basically our ego. Within our mind, we think thoughts. And thoughts are said to be the most powerful form of energy. Thoughts that we keep thinking over and over again become our beliefs. And we make our beliefs true just by continuing to think about them over and over again.

Let me give you some examples.

Here are some of my thoughts --> that are now my beliefs --> that are now my truth:

  • I don’t get sick
  • My body knows how to heal itself
  • I am good enough
  • I matter
  • My body will produce symptoms to let me know when my thoughts are “off” so I can reverse or clean up my thoughts faster
  • My feelings or emotions let me know when my thoughts are “off” so I can reverse or clean up my thoughts faster
  • Loving myself is important
  • Everything is working out for me
  • I am happy

These weren’t always my thoughts or beliefs. I’ve worked diligently over the past few years to change them. And just by changing my thoughts, my whole life got better. I am no longer the miserable, draining person I used to be.

Here are some of my OLD thoughts and beliefs:

  • I’m not good enough
  • No one will help me
  • I’m all alone
  • I don’t matter
  • No one really loves me
  • People are mean
  • I have to do all of the work
  • Life is a struggle
  • Everything is difficult
  • Several foods & chemicals are harming me
  • There is nothing I can do
  • I catch colds from other people
  • I get the flu every winter
  • I can’t sleep
  • Nothing ever works out for me

Now compare the lists of my OLD thoughts vs. my NEW thoughts. Which one feels better to you? Which one feels powerless? Which one feels like despair? Which one feels like Negative Nellie?

You see, what we think and believe matters! Our thoughts have an energy or vibration that they give off. And like a magnet, we attract back to us things that match up with the energy we are giving off.

So, if your thoughts are causing you to feel frustrated, you attract more frustrating things.

If your thoughts are causing you to feel anger or resentment, you attract more things to be angry and resentful about.

If your thoughts are causing you to feel anxious or fearful, you attract more things to be anxious and fearful about.

Likewise, if your thoughts are loving, you attract more things to feel loving about.

If your thoughts are causing you to feel happy, you attract more things to feel happy about.

Get it? Is this making sense? Your thoughts really do matter!

A Course In Miracles teaches that no thought is neutral. Each and every thought will either make you feel better or worse. Each and every thought will be based in Love or Fear.

Our ego is the fear-based side of our thoughts. Our true self is the love-based side of our thoughts.

Negative Nellie, who is based in fear, often controls our thoughts when we aren’t paying attention. Negative Nellie yells. Negative Nellie is relentless. She doesn’t give up. She is convinced that she is right. She will fight endlessly.

Your true self is gentle. It is soft. It whispers loving thoughts in your ear.

In order to hear the good stuff, the loving stuff, you have to train your mind to be quiet. You have to slowly stop listening to Negative Nellie. You have to gain some new information and tools so that you can see and know that Negative Nellie doesn’t know what she’s talking about. You have to realize that Negative Nellie is a bully, and she needs to go.
