The Road to Wellness is completely backwards from what I used to think it was. Yep, #Backwards.
Here’s a fun list of what I USED to believe about health:
I could go on, but I’m sure you get the picture. I USED to be AGAINST a lot of things, and I took every precaution to avoid everything “bad,” while eating as healthy as I could and exercising regularly.
And then I got sick anyway. WTH???
Now, don’t get me wrong, I did the best I could at the time. And I especially believe that eating healthy and exercising regularly helped me feel better most of the time. But when my emotional stress got the best of me, none of the other “healthy” things worked.
On my road to wellness, I’ve had to take a look at ALL of my beliefs and fears. And you know what? It was my beliefs and fears that caused my illnesses, pain & suffering. #Backwards.
It took me awhile to really get it. I was just so sure that chemicals, bad food & bugs were to blame for how bad I felt. How could it be possible that it was really my mind that was the cause of it all?
When it finally settled in that my mindset was the real culprit, I spent a lot of time “beating myself up.” Why couldn’t I figure it out sooner? Why was it taking so long to make changes? Why was it so hard to figure out how I was sabotaging myself?
Fast forward several years. I’ve learned that everything is #backwards from what I originally learned. I had to unlearn a lot to find myself.
I’d like to share with you what I learned that helped me the most on my road to wellness.
Step #1 – Logically understand what is going on.
I’m a bit stubborn, and I over-analyze everything. I had to logically understand something before I would try it. I couldn’t just “let stuff go” until I really believed that it wasn’t true. I wanted to be right (about a lot of things). While I still believed something was true, there was no way I was going to let it go.
My need to be right kept me stuck. My anger fueled more incorrect assumptions. I thought I knew what other people’s intentions were. Boy, was I wrong. I had beliefs and scenarios that I kept “playing” over and over in my mind. My inner voice was critical of me and everyone around me. I complained a lot.
Like I said, I had a lot to unlearn. But I wasn’t about to begin until I understood more. Then I had to become more aware of just what my thoughts were. I had become so sloppy in my thinking that I just let my negative thoughts spin out of control. They were controlling me. I didn’t know I could control them.
Does this sound like you? Stubborn, over-analyzing, inner voice that just won’t shut up, constant complaining, etc.
I’d recommend getting the background info on this mindset stuff here. You’ll be glad you did!
Step #2 – Learn tools to let go of the negative stuff.
“Letting go” feels like you are relaxing, like you are floating on a cloud, like everything will finally be OK, like you could even be happy. THIS is when your body begins to heal! You need to be in a calm, relaxed state for this process to naturally occur.
Remember the fight-or-flight reaction? This process happens any time we are scared or stressed in any way (dog chases us, boss yells at us, kid gets hurt, spouse does something we don’t like, etc). It shuts down our digestive & immune systems. The body knows what to do to heal, but can’t do its job until you return to a calm, peaceful state again.
So, back to learning tools to let the negative stuff go…A Course In Miracles (ACIM) was my go-to for the tools that worked best for me. Within this book, there is a Workbook for Students section. This is the real deal. This section has a lesson for every day of the year. The 1st 6 months of lessons help you let go of ego (fear/anger/judgment-based) stuff. The 2nd 6 months help you with forgiveness and loving yourself again. Powerful stuff. As of this writing, I’ve been through the Workbook section 3 times. I’m able to go deeper each and every time.
My signature online course, Learn To Heal Yourself, is based on the teachings contained within ACIM. In fact, I was given all of the lessons through meditation. And, yeah, it kinda freaked me out at first. Then I just did what I was told. I figured that my ego had been misleading me for all of my life up until then, so what did I have to lose? What I lost was a lot of anger, resentment, fear, hurt feelings, judgment, etc. What I gained was love, happiness, freedom, ease, clarity, peace, etc. Totally worth it!
Step #3 – Shift towards how you want to feel.
Once I had let go of a lot of my negative junk, my natural well-being returned. My relationships became more harmonious. I was happy…and that’s a big deal, because I don’t remember being happy. Ever.
Now I was led to explore the Law of Attraction (LOA) with Abraham Hicks. LOA teaches that everything is energy, and what you focus on is what you attract.
You feeling frustrated? Guess what, the Universe brings you more things to feel frustrated about.
You feeling the struggle of life? Guess what, the Universe brings you more things to feel the struggle about.
You feeling worried? Guess what, the Universe brings you more things to feel worried about.
You feeling angry? Guess what? Yep, the Universe brings you more things to feel angry about.
You feeling like you don't have time for this stuff? Yep, the Universe brings you more things that make you feel like you don't have any time.
You feeling pain, suffering, sickness? Guess what? You know the deal.
Likewise, you feeling fun & frisky? The Universe brings you more things to feel fun & frisky about.
You feeling ease? The Universe brings you more things that are easy and work out effortlessly.
You feeling appreciation? The Universe surprises and delights you with more things to appreciate.
I dove into this stuff. It really helped me clarify HOW I wanted to feel. It also helped me see that the Universe brings me what I’m focused on or thinking about, so if it brought me something I didn’t like I could change my thoughts. It’s a feedback loop!
My 2nd online course is based on this LOA work. Once you grasp this stuff, you have the world by the tail. YOU get to create what you want. YOU decide how you want to feel. Cool stuff.
Step #4: Repeat Steps 1-3.
It’s as simple as that. You don’t go looking for all your crap. But, on any given day, here is your path:
So there you have it. My secrets to the Universe (and healing!).
